Executive Summary
APAC Positioning in the Global Market
The APAC region consists of the largest Li-ion reserves and so occupies the largest market share, accounting for ~%, whereas Europe holds only one-fourth of the market share.
China has 300,000 public EV chargers (as of 2018), which is 50% higher than the global public EV charger market.
EV battery recycling is another important area where major players are deploying their R&D, and considering the resources available in Asia, this region is expected to have an upper edge in EV battery recycling market as well.
Currently India imports 100% of Li-ion batteries due to lack of reserves and production capacity however in recent move government is planning to make the country self reliant nation and have introduced several schemes to attract investment from players in the Li-ion battery pack production.
Electric Vehicles Driving Li-ion Demand
Another major contributor in the emergence of need to develop Li-ion battery market is electric vehicles. Li-ion batteries account for almost 50% of the total cost of production of electric vehicles and to make these vehicles affordable to achieve government target of replacing commercial and non-commercial vehicles into emission free electric vehicles it is important to reduce the cost.
Performance of Li-ion in Indian Market
In 2019, India had set a target of 225 GW of renewables by 2022 however considering the present scenario where the pandemic has affected the market and GDP has witnessed its worst performance this target is expected to be met by 2024.
The automotive sector is expected to be the largest segment of consumption of Li-ion batteries wherein demand is expected to grow at ~25% by 2030.
India has shown manifold growth in its imports of Li-ion batteries in the last 5 years where the majority of the imports come from China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and the USA. China alone accounts for approximately three-fourths of the total imports.
